Penetrating Damp

What is penetrating damp?

The term penetrating damp is used to describe the action of rainwater passing through the walls and the roof of a property. Penetrating damp will often show itself as damp patches, either visible or read through equipment, damp staining, mould growth, and decoration damage. Rainwater can penetrate at any area the property will allow it to, so it can be found in all and any areas of the external walls of the property. If left untreated, penetrating damp can cause costly damages to the property.

What causes penetrating damp?

Penetrating damp may arise from various causes, most commonly as a result of defects in the exterior structure of the property that permit the ingress of rainwater. Common sources include blocked or leaking gutters, deteriorated pointing or masonry, inadequate window sealants, and roof leaks. It is vital to accurately identify the origin of penetrating damp in order to implement effective remediation. This process is best conducted through a professional survey designed to inspect, diagnose, and report on the specific source of moisture ingress.
